Training Agenda
Day 1 – Teradata Fundamentals and Core SQL
- Introduction: objectives, agenda, overview of the Teradata ecosystem in enterprise environments.
- Teradata Architecture: AMPs, Parsing Engines, BYNET, data distribution and hashing, skew and redistribution issues.
- Connecting to Teradata: tools such as Teradata Studio and BTEQ.
- Core SQL: SELECT, WHERE, ORDER BY; data types, casting, aliases; CASE expressions and conditional logic; Teradata-specific operators (QUALIFY, SAMPLE, TOP).
- Hands-on exercises.
- Data definition and management: CREATE, DROP, volatile tables, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, MERGE, transaction control, and locking behavior.
- Hands-on: creating and maintaining target tables.
- Joins and subqueries: INNER, LEFT, RIGHT, FULL OUTER JOIN; scalar vs. correlated subqueries; set operators UNION, INTERSECT, MINUS.
- Hands-on integration exercises and introduction to EXPLAIN plans.
- Applied workshop: building a sales report with joins and filters, analyzing query plans with EXPLAIN, identifying skew and redistribution.
Day 2 – Analytics and Performance Optimization
- Recap and Q&A from Day 1.
- Analytical and OLAP functions: RANK, ROW_NUMBER, DENSE_RANK, PARTITION BY, OVER(), LAG, LEAD, FIRST_VALUE, cumulative sums.
- Business applications: KPIs, trends, moving averages.
- Performance optimization and best practices: how the Teradata optimizer works, using EXPLAIN and COLLECT STATISTICS effectively.
- Common performance issues: skew, spool space, redistribution.
- Hands-on workshop: optimizing inefficient queries.
- Final integrated lab: loading data, transformations, aggregations, query optimization, and exporting results.
